Liverpool are ready to replace one of Richard Hughes’ key signings after just one year.

Richard Hughes has overseen a major overhaul at Liverpool since becoming sporting director in 2024. He’s brought in Arne Slot as head coach, overseen the departure of key players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, managed the biggest transfer window in the club’s history and this summer will again oversee key players departing.

Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson will certainly leave. We expect Alisson Becker to join them, potentially Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones, too.

Overseeing departures like this is two-fold, though. It also requires finding replacements, either directly position-to-position or in terms of what they bring to the squad.

Replacing Alexander-Arnold, for instance, meant not just finding a new starting right-back but also making up for the dramatic loss in ball progression and creativity. Something, it’s fair to say, Liverpool are yet to do.

Hughes has gotten ahead of some of these departures, though. For Alisson, that meant signing Giorgi Mamardashvili in 2024 for him to join in 2025.

But reports are growing that Mamardashvili won’t be the one to replace the Brazilian. Teamtalk is the latest to report as such, suggesting the Reds are in the market for a new no.1 goalkeeper because of doubts in the Georgian.

That’s something Liverpool won’t want to do. Mamardashvili was certainly signed to be the club’s no.1 goalkeeper and replacing him before he’s even really taken up the role would raise eyebrows.

Then again, if they’re not confident, there’s not a lot you can do other than find someone new. It’ll be a difficult one to navigate this season – but Liverpool will need to make a tough decision one way or another.

Giorgi Mamardashvili: Situation Summary

Liverpool Performance and Stats

As of 15 May 2026, Giorgi Mamardashvili is completing his first full season at Liverpool following his move from Valencia. Filling in during Alisson Becker’s injury layoffs, the 25-year-old has made 26 appearances, including nine in the Premier League. He maintains an average FotMob rating of 6.73, recently keeping a clean sheet in a 2–0 win over Fulham on 11 April. Most recently, he started in the 1–1 draw against Chelsea on 9 May, recording two saves.

Future and Transfer News

Despite his role as Alisson’s understudy, reports from May 2026 suggest Mamardashvili is “frustrated” with his lack of consistent first-team football. Rumours have emerged linking him with a potential return to Valencia or a move to other European clubs, especially as Alisson is reportedly considering a switch to Juventus.

International Standing

A national hero for Georgia, Mamardashvili remains their undisputed number one and is set to lead them at the 2026 World Cup this June.
