⚾Game of the Day

The Scituate baseball team went from being one swing away from being done early to one swing away from losing on Saturday afternoon.

All it took was a fresh-faced pitcher to make sure it didn’t happen.

With the bullpen empty and the bases loaded, the Spartans turned to Liam Shields to save the day and the freshman came through, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and pitching himself out of another in the seventh in a 10-9 win over Juanita Sanchez.

Drama seemed out of the question after Scituate turned a game tied at two into a route. The Spartans piled on eight runs in the fourth inning, getting two off a single from Tyler North, which was followed by an RBI double by Aiden Ouillette and a sacrifice fly by Kaleb Baccaire that made it 10-2. With a runner on base, the Cavaliers managed to record the final out and keep the game going.

Juanita Sanchez picked up one run in the fifth and then rallied for three more, loading the bases and forcing Scituate to go to the bullpen. Shields came in and gave up a run on a sacrifice fly, but retired the next hitter to end the inning.

His dazzling array of off-speed pitches couldn’t prevent the Cavaliers from continuing to rally. A one-out hit by pitch and walked loaded the bases, but Shields induced a ground ball that scored a run but picked up a second out.

Scituate elected to walk Isaiah Bento – who had homered in the first inning – and Shields then hit Henry Trinidad to bring home another run. Instead of panicking, the freshman went to work and got Yorvit Martinez to ground out to short to end the game.

North led Scituate’s offense, driving in three runs and scoring once. Ouillette went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and Baccaire drove in two runs and scored once. Drake Dumont finished with two hits and two runs and Stephen Cronan went 3-for-4 with one run in the win.

Bento was the offensive star for Juanita Sanchez, going 2-for-2 with four RBI, one run and three walks. Angel Polanco finished 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI and Matthew Santos had two hits and scored twice in the loss.

Scituate is now 11-5 on the season and in third in the Division III RPI standings. After playing four games this week, Spartans get a much-deserved day off Sunday before returning to the field Monday at Tiverton.

Juanita Sanchez drops to 11-6 and is in sixth in the D-III RPI. The Cavaliers also wrapped up a four-game week, will rest Sunday and be back in action when they hit the road Monday for a game at North Smithfield.
