West Jordan’s boys and Box Elder’s girls captured their respective state championships on Saturday at the state track meet at BYU.

The title was the first in school history for West Jordan’s boys. For the girls, Box Elder ran away from the 5A field to win its first title since 2022.

Here’s a look at some of the top storylines from this year’s meet.

Class 5A Top 3

  1. West Jordan, 65
  2. Viewmont, 64
  3. Brighton, 55

Girls

5A Championship storylines

West Jordan captures first 5A title in school history

The chase for the 5A state championship was always going to be extremely tight, but through 17 of 18 events on Saturday, it had shaken out to be a two-team race.

Defending champ and favored Viewmont led West Jordan 58 to 55 heading into the final 4×400 relay. The Jaguars knew that even if they won, they still needed a little help as Viewmont couldn’t finish second.

Incredibly, that’s exactly what happend.

West Jordan won and Viewmont finished second as the Jaguars pulled ahead by one measly point, 65-64, to win its first boys track state championship in school history.

“It is very awesome. We lost by a few points two years ago,” said West Jordan coach Taylor Johnson, recalling coming up short by two points in a year its top athlete got injured at the meet. “And last year we barely missed getting second place, so it just feels really good to finally do it.”

Johnson knew her team had talent, but everything started to fall in line in the last couple weeks for the Jaguars.

“It wasn’t until a like a week ago, my husband has a spreadsheet and he’s like, ‘We we could win this.’ But we didn’t tell our kids that because we didn’t want them to get all stressed or anything,” said Johnson.

Paul Havea was a surprise winner in the shot put, while Ian McIntyre’s eighth-place finish in the javelin was a surprise and a massive point to win the title outright.

Porter Creasy set the tone for the entire day by winning the 100 meters early on Saturday, and then late in the meet by winning the 200 meters.

Box Elder runs away from 5A for state title

In a huge classification of 30 teams, sometimes at the state track meet a team score in the 60s can put you in the running. That’s exactly how things unfolded for West Jordan’s boys.

That’s why Box Elder’s 83 points this weekend at BYU led to an emphatic 5A girls state championship.

The Bees ran away from the field with Springville and Salem Hills finishing in a distance second-place tie with 58 points.

Coach Katie Smith chalks all the success and the school’s first title since 2022 to the family vibes on the team.

“To be honest, it it really just feels more like a family than a team. They show up for each other every day, we push each other and when someone’s having a rough day, we kind of just put it together and pick them back up and and then the next person’s in line,” said Smith, whose team last won a state title 2022.

En route to the title, Smith said there were several school records set that were a bit of a surprise.

Kaylan Anderson set a new 400-meter school record in finishing first at the state meet. Kassidee Kidd also broke the 100-meter school record in winning that event.

And Maya Lee also broke the school record in the 800 and 3,200 meters as she finished in eighth in both races.

Smiths’ message to the team before Saturday’s finals was pretty simple, “just do what we do. We show up, it’s just like any other meet. They push each other and they really love each other, so, and you can tell, it comes out on the track,” said Smith.

5A Record Breakers

Kambri Muir, Salem Hills (42.57, 300 hurdles) – broke the old state record of 42.91 by Timpview’s Annie Nuttall in 2024.

“In the beginning of the season, I had a pretty bad crash, rashed over hurdle eight and was in the hospital, unconscious for about an hour. They were like, ‘You’re not going to walk again.’ And I walked away with a concussion to defy all odds. And I had everybody in my ear telling me that I was never going to get anywhere. I’ve had people leading up to this meet praying on my downfall. And I knew that I had to go out there today, I had to leave it with God, and I had to leave it to myself and show that I knew what I was doing out there today. And so, I really put everything that I could into that race, and and it showed. I was pretty proud of myself knowing that I was capable of doing something like that.”

5A Multi-Event Winners

Aidan Neal, Alta – 1,600, 3,200 meters

Lily Alder, Timpview – 800, 1,600, 3,200 meters

“Just so much gratitude for this team and the opportunity I have to run here. It’s such a great atmosphere and I’m just so grateful. I just always wanted to end it with a bang and doing three events kind of would do that,”

“I think it was definitely eye-opening just how hard it is to be in that top spot. Just trying to do my best and set an example for the younger girls.”

Kambri Muir, Salem Hills – 100, 300 hurdles

Porter Creasy – 100, 200 meters, 4×100 relay

“I’m feeling great. I couldn’t have done it without my team. I was just thinking about the team. We wanted to get the state championship. I was ranked fourth in the 200, and then I got first. I was just on the home stretch, I was just thinking about the team and you know, that really just pushed me through and yeah, that’s what I did.”

Kassidee Kidd, Box Elder – 100 meters, Long jump, 4×200 relay

Kaylan Anderson, Box Elder – 400 meters, 4×200 relay
