ATLANTA — The Red Sox placed Trevor Story on the 10-day injured list before Saturday’s game against the Braves with a sports hernia and recalled versatile infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester to take Story’s spot on the 26-man roster.

The 33-year-old shortstop has been dealing with a groin injury all season and aggravated it in late April when the Red Sox played in Baltimore. Story said Saturday that he is considering surgery on the issue after consulting with doctors and having the hernia diagnosed.

“We’re still unsure, but possibly,” he said when asked about surgery. “Still trying to diagnose it, the severity of it, because we’ve got a couple of different opinions.

“We’re trying to get the best information, not make a rushed decision,” he added. “Obviously, surgery is not ideal or wanted, so trying to navigate this thing as best we can with the information that we have.”

Story said the “basic prognosis” for surgery to repair a sports hernia is a 6-10 week absence.

“I’m trying not to let my mind go there,” the shortstop said. “It’s obviously different for each guy.”

Story has struggled offensively and defensively throughout this season. He’s batting .206 with a .244 on-base percentage, .303 slugging percentage and .547 OPS in 41 games (176 plate appearances). He has three home runs, seven doubles, 19 RBIs and eight walks compared to 57 strikeouts.

His 44.0% chase percentage is the fifth-worst among qualified major league hitters, while his 32.4% strikeout percentage is the sixth-worst.

He also ranks in the 10th percentile in Outs Above Average with a mark of -3. He said the hernia is not the only reason for his performance but conceded that he has not felt like himself on the field.

“I’m not going to be blaming it all on that, but it plays a part for sure,” Story said. “I think the main thing is getting it right. I’m not so much worried about what has happened. More worried about problem-solving it and moving forward with the next steps, whatever that may be.

“If you’re watching the game, I think you can tell that I’m not moving the way that I want, and that’s frustrating. At this level, I think you have to have a certain amount of yourself to feel like yourself. Recently, it has reared its head that it might not be the case.”

With Story out, the Red Sox could move 23-year-old second baseman Marcelo Mayer to shortstop or start Andruw Monasterio there. Monasterio already has started five games at shortstop.

Mayer came through the Red Sox minor league system as a shortstop. He has the potential to be an above-average defender there. But the Red Sox have wanted Mayer to focus primarily on second base this season. The team has repeatedly stated it would not use Mayer at shortstop on Story’s off days. Perhaps that changes with Story sidelined due to an injury.

“I know the big question is Marcelo. Everyone’s gonna want to know that,” said interim manager Chad Tracy. “I do think part of that depends on knowing what’s happening with Trevor. Is this a three-week thing and he’s back quick or is this a longer thing?

“We have definitely kicked around that we know Marcelo has played short and he has done it his whole life. No. 1, it’s not something we’re going to do right now, and No. 2, we can’t just fire him over there if we’re gonna do that. He’d need to get some work. He has taken no ground balls anywhere but second.”

The 28-year-old Sogard is batting .269 with a .417 on-base percentage, .454 slugging percentage, .871 OPS, five home runs, nine doubles, 23 RBIs and 27 runs in 36 games (168 plate appearances) for the WooSox. He has more walks (35) than strikeouts (29).

He has made 14 starts at first base, nine at shortstop, five at second base, four at third base and two in right field this season.

He appeared in 61 games for Boston in 2024 and ’25, batting .266 with a .321 on-base percentage and .335 slugging percentage in 190 plate appearances.
