Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano MVP MMA live blog
This is the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano live blog for the featherweight main event at MVP MMA on Saturday at Intuit Dome in Los Angeles.
Rousey (12-2) and Carano (7-1) are two key figures in the rise of women’s MMA, with Rousey becoming a household name in the UFC following Carano’s work alongside Cris Cyborg that helped female fighters break into the mainstream.
It’s been almost 10 years since Rousey last fought, with her UFC run ending unceremoniously with a pair of devastating knockout losses to Amanda Nunes and Holly Holm. At her peak, Rousey was a force of nature in the 135-pound division, defending her UFC title on multiple occasions, often needing only seconds to vanquish her opponents. With in-cage success came widespread fame and there was a time when Rousey was a household name, with her brand extending into the broader world of entertainment.
Following a successful stint with the WWE and flirtations with Hollywood, Rousey now fights again with the chance to finally go out on her own terms.
Carano has been out of action even longer, having stepped away from fighting in 2009 following a loss to Cyborg. That matchup made history as the first-ever major MMA event headlined by two women, drawing a reported 576,000 viewers on Showtime. Carano and Cyborg’s duel opened the door for Rousey and countless others, while also allowing Carano to capitalize on her fame by being featured in major films and later the popular Star Wars series The Mandalorian (a gig that ended abruptly when Disney fired Carano for sharing a series of controversial social media posts comparing the treatment of Republicans to victims of the Holocaust).
Will Rousey deliver a dominant throwback performance or can Carano turn the clock back and beat the enormous odds?
