Indianapolis Colts‘ second-year safety Hunter Wohler is getting close to returning to the field.
A promising start to training camp last summer was cut short after Wohler suffered a Lisfranc injury in the Colts’ preseason game with Green Bay. The injury required surgery, and he was placed on injured reserve, where he remained for his entire rookie season.
The recovery has been a “long process,” Wohler said recently, but he feels good and is nearing a return.
“We’re getting there,” said Wohler when asked about his return to the field, via Roundtable Sports. “We’re real close. I feel good. Body feels good. I’m just excited to get back on the field. I’m excited to get back playing, get around the guys. Just have some fun.”
Wohler was non-committal when asked if he would be available for OTAs or mandatory minicamp in June, but is confident that he will be good to go for training camp.
“For sure. For sure,” he said.
Before the injury last summer, Wohler appeared to be on his way to carving out a role as the Colts’ third safety. The Colts remain very bullish on his ability to contribute to this year’s team.
“Hunter on the back end playing safety, the ball just found him in training camp,” Shane Steichen said at the NFL combine. “He had a great sense, a great feel playing the coverages that we were playing, but he was always in the right spot at the right time. He had a hell of a camp.”
With the starting spot next to Cam Bynum up for grabs, Wohler could find himself in the mix for those snaps with AJ Haulcy, Juanyeh Thomas, and Jonathan Owens. That said, he may again be best suited for that third safety role in big dime packages, where he can provide a coverage presence but also help out against the run.
