Pittsburgh Steelers writer Mark Madden has never been one to pull punches when it comes to his thoughts on the Steelers. Madden took to X to offer his thoughts on the two young quarterbacks on Pittsburgh’s roster, Drew Allar and Will Howard. Madden clearly favors Allar over Howard and offered a scathing comparison between the two.
Madden believes Allar could be a starter for the Steelers but Howard is destined to be on the practice squad. Madden went on to compare their draft status and said he feels like new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy can teach Allar what he needs but can’t teach the skills Howard lacks.
Allar vs. Howard = mismatch.
3rd round vs 6th round.
QB factory vs. weak arm.
McCarthy can teach Allar what he doesn’t know.
McCarthy can’t give Howard what he doesn’t have.
Allar = possible starter.
Howard = practice-squad lifer.— Mark Madden (@MarkMaddenX) May 9, 2026
McCarthy comes to the Steelers as something of a quarterback guru. If there’s anyone who can evaluate and then develop the better of these two, it’ll be him. McCarthy only had Allar at the team’s rookie minicamp last weekend so he could dig in on Allar’s game more. McCarthy has also been very vocal about how impressed he is with Howard based on his college film.
