We can go down a list of why the New York Yankees have done what they’ve done throughout the season, and that list has to start with somebody like Cam Schlittler.
The 25-year-old has arguably been the best starting pitcher in Major League Baseball. He’s already thrown 53.1 innings, striking out 59, walking just nine, and posting a 1.35 ERA already.
What makes things even crazier is that he was actually the second pitcher in Major League Baseball history to accomplish that feat, showing just how ridiculous his start to the campaign has been when you really look at it.
“Cam Schlittler of the Yankees is the first MLB pitcher to have 50+ strikeouts, fewer than 10 walks, no more than 1 HR allowed, [and] a sub-1.50 ERA over his first 9 starts of a season since Walter Johnson in 1913,” OptaSTATS wrote.
Schlittler has a good bit of the season left to show why he’s been as good as he’s throwing the baseball right now over a full 162.
I knew right away when watching him pitch against the Boston Red Sox a year ago that he was going to be one of the best starters in baseball for a very long time. I didn’t know he was going to be this dominant right away, but the kid has all the makings of a big leaguer, and one that has top-five-pitcher-in-the-game potential.
