It’s official: After a schedule announcement on Tuesday morning that the Denver Broncoswill face off against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Monday Night Football opener, the only question that was unanswered was the “Where?”
Now, that question has been answered: Denver will open their season on the road at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 14. This will be the first time the Broncos will start the year on the road against their longtime division rivals.
The Broncos won both games against the Chiefs last fall, and this game may serve as the welcome-back party for Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes after a serious knee injury ended his season late in 2025. If that’s the case, and both teams are at full strength, this game may serve as the measuring stick for who has the inside track on the AFC West race in 2026.
Here’s a sampling of how Twitter/X reacted to the location for the opener.
There we go. It’s in Kansas City. I love it.
KC in September over December any day of the week.
Also Mahomes return should be at home.
And if I’m the Broncos, I’d rather have the second game be at home when it could be for the AFC West title. https://t.co/7YWqjtgM9H— Romi Bean (@Romi_Bean) May 12, 2026
There’s a first time for everything…
The Broncos and Chiefs have played 132 times, dating back more than 60 years.
Denver has NEVER opened its season on the road against the Chiefs.
“Monday Night Football” at Arrowhead will be the first time the Broncos open the year in KC.

#Broncos announce their Monday Night Football opener against the #Chiefs will be at Arrowhead.
Not a bad outcome for Denver, with Patrick Mahomes’ early-season status still up in the air. https://t.co/1MCAS2YOQY

So, the Broncos will open up the year in Arrowhead https://t.co/SAyaGGZWLl

Perfect. Bo Nix will claim Arrowhead… again. https://t.co/NstriKtmyo

Broncos WON the division and are on the road on MNFWOW Goodell will do anything for Mahomes to have an edge. https://t.co/TmYXyxj8vh

LAME. We can still win there, but Broncos earned a home opener https://t.co/iC6lbIfQPu

Bring it on. https://t.co/s5s52Z7Za2

I would rather play at Arrowhead in September over December this is good https://t.co/SKClx8FhQk

Are Broncos fans seriously mad about this? We don’t have to make our annual December roadie to KC and we’re complaining? https://t.co/vPu6s2ceCo

Wrong decision by the NFL but not necessarily bad news for the Broncos.
Arrowhead in December sucks. https://t.co/XERzMJEsnK

Can’t imagine a better feeling than walking into Kansas City and leaving there 1-0 to start 2026. 🤞🏼 https://t.co/PHbbO25aN8

Playing THAT early in Kansas City is a massive win….
Question remains if Patrick Mahomes will be ready for week on.
Hard for me to think he will be ready, but you never know. https://t.co/4fmq1U4pST

This is could be the best possible week to travel to Arrowhead. It’ll be Mahomes’ first game back after the knee, if there are no setbacks in his recovery timeline. https://t.co/bnTr38wjMY

Early season matchup in KC which means favorable weather and Mahomes availability up in the air?
Absolute W for the Broncos. https://t.co/Ssdhs3MjFE

Looking in the comments section is fun. I get what people are saying. Realistically, the game probably should be played in Denver. But guys…. this is a win. It’s a good thing. #BroncosCountryhttps://t.co/hk3OjPH8QF

The discourse that was created with the TBD location announcement during the day seemed to be bifurcated.
Most neutral observers thought the Week 1 game should be at Mile High, but most Broncos fans preferred getting the Arrowhead trip out of the way right away (and I concur). https://t.co/cdw4m0srXC

Will Mahomes make his return in Week 1 at Arrowhead on Monday Night Football? 👀 https://t.co/0wau1ybCEO

While the storyline leading up to the game may center on Mahomes’ return, this would be the perfect way for the Broncos to make a statement to begin 2026. What better way to start than by getting a divisional matchup out of the way?
Bring it on!
