The Toronto Blue Jays entered the 2026 season expecting to build off last year’s World Series run. Instead, the Blue Jays have spent the first several weeks searching for consistency while watching the rest of the American League East pull away. That is why Saturday’s lineup decision immediately stood out.
Ahead of Toronto’s matchup against the Detroit Tigers, veteran infielder Ernie Clement was not included in the starting lineup. Instead, Lenyn Sosa drew the start as Toronto continued trying to spark an offense that has underperformed for much of the season.
While the move appears to simply be a routine maintenance day, it also revealed something much bigger about where the Blue Jays currently stand.
Ernie Clement has quietly become one of Toronto’s most reliable players
Toronto’s offense has struggled to find rhythm throughout the opening stretch of the season. Injuries have hurt lineup continuity, while several key veterans have failed to produce at their expected level. That has created an even bigger role for Clement.
The 30-year-old has become one of the most dependable hitters in Toronto’s lineup thanks to his elite contact ability and consistency at the plate. Entering Saturday, Clement was batting .291 while posting one of the lowest strikeout rates in Major League Baseball at just 7.8 percent.
For a Blue Jays lineup that has frequently struggled to generate baserunners and sustained rallies, Clement’s approach has become incredibly valuable. His defensive impact has already been established over the past two seasons. Clement emerged as one of baseball’s steadiest infield defenders while earning Gold Glove finalist recognition in both 2024 and 2025. But this season, his offensive production has elevated his importance even further.

Blue Jays need more from their biggest stars
Toronto expected players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer to help lead one of the American League’s most dangerous offenses this year. Instead, inconsistency has become one of the defining themes of the Blue Jays’ season.
That has forced Toronto to lean more heavily on complementary contributors like Clement to stabilize the lineup on a nightly basis. When one of the most reliable hitters on the roster receives a scheduled day off, it suddenly becomes noticeable in a way few would have expected entering the season. The Blue Jays entered Saturday at 19-25 and sitting 10.5 games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays. With the standings beginning to tighten around them, Toronto desperately needs momentum before the season slips further away.
And increasingly, players like Clement are becoming just as important to that push as the franchise’s biggest stars.
