So far, so good for the Cincinnati Bengals and rookie draft picks Cashius Howell and Tacario Davis.
One year ago, Bengals fans learned that there was even a thing called a “participation waiver” when Shemar Stewart wouldn’t sign it. That was the snowball that turned into an avalanche of contract drama and cost the first-round pick serious time over a minor contract dispute with a pretty silly ending.
This year, fans noticed that Howell and Davis, second and third-round picks, respectively, were the only two rookies who didn’t sign their contracts for the start of rookie minicamp.
But they did sign the participation waiver and were out there practicing with the team.
Granted, this doesn’t mean there couldn’t be contract drama with the two rookies later. But it’s a sign of good faith to all that both signed the waivers that protect them in case of injury and were out there with the team.
It’s a little thing. But in Cincinnati, specifically, that little thing turned into something big in a hurry just one year ago.
