We have all stuck our foot in our mouths occasionally. It’s easy to do. If you haven’t, don’t worry. Your time is coming. Spend enough time speaking, and it will, at some point, happen to the best of us. What does that have to do with the Baltimore Ravens, you ask? Well, let’s just say a rookie quarterback came dangerously close to sticking a pair of cleats in his oral cavity.
After selecting Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns added Taylen Green during the sixth round this past April. Rookie minicamps are underway, and Green spoke at Cleveland’s. After being asked if there was any quarterback who shared his potential, he came dangerously close to making a wild comparison involving Lamar Jackson that may have followed him for a while. Here’s the statement via Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.
“To be honest, no. I would say of course Lamar (Jackson), but he ain’t 6-[foot-]6. Josh Allen is close, but I’m 230. He’s like 260. My dad says Randall Cunningham-ish. I really don’t think there’s anybody like me. Not in a like cocky [way] or anything, just some confidence. There’s nobody that moves like me, that’s as tall as me.”
Okay, it’s easy to see where he was headed. He’s discussing his physical profile and style of play. To his credit, the former Arkansas quarterback clearly wasn’t attempting to disrespect anyone. In fact, he seemed more focused on explaining why he believes there isn’t another quarterback built quite like him. The issue is that once Lamar Jackson’s name enters the conversation, the standard changes immediately. Jackson isn’t just any athletic quarterback. He’s a two-time NFL MVP, a three-time First-Team All-Pro, and one of the most dynamic players professional football has ever seen.
Confidence is necessary, but comparisons matter
Again, Green didn’t sound arrogant so much as confident. Honestly, confidence is almost mandatory for quarterbacks entering the NFL, especially developmental prospects drafted into chaotic quarterback rooms like Cleveland’s.
Green possesses rare physical tools, and he knows it. At 6-foot-6, roughly 230 pounds, and armed with blazing athleticism, there genuinely are not many quarterbacks built like him physically. A 4.36 forty-yard dash and a 43-inch vertical jump certainly support that argument, but again, any comparison to Lamar Jackson, even if it’s innocent, is a touchy subject. Comparing physical traits is one thing. Mentioning yourself anywhere near that resume before proving anything professionally quickly becomes risky territory. Any time someone mentions Lamar ‘Action’ Jackson, the always-protective Ravens fan base raises an eyebrow.
Green threw 59 touchdown passes in college and 35 interceptions — rushing for 35 touchdowns while going 24-22 in 46 starts at Boise State (2022-23) and Arkansas (2024-2025).
That’s especially true when we’re discussing a rookie who hasn’t played a snap of pro football yet. That’s nearly enough to make every AFC North social media channel pause, if only for a few minutes. Green still has much to prove. The potential is there, but first, he must beat out Deshaun Watson, Gabriel, and Sanders before this even becomes a serious conversation.
