The Los Angeles Dodgers lost the final game of a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday by a score of 7-2.
The Dodgers have scored just four runs in their last 18 innings of baseball, failing to give themselves a fighting chance in either game. Their offense dragged Sunday, as they recorded just two hits on the day.
Justin Wrobleski started the game for the Dodgers, and had a decent day following an early hiccup. The left-hander retired 16 in a row at one point, and fell just one out short of his first career perfect game. Wrobleski threw 8.2 innings in the outing, allowing six earned runs on seven hits while striking out a season-high seven batters.
The Braves got on the board first in the top of the second inning, scoring through an RBI single from outfielder Eli White. Wrobleski loaded the bases with a walk later in the inning, and a three-run double off the bat of Mauricio Dubon extended the visitors’ lead to four.
The game went quiet for several innings afterwards, with both Wrobleski and opposing pitcher Bryce Elder shutting down the other team’s offense. The biggest chance for either team during that stretch came in the sixth, when the Dodgers managed to load the bases through three consecutive walks.
Max Muncy stepped to the plate for the Dodgers with the bases loaded and tattooed a ball to right field, but an unbelievable catch from White ended the inning and left all three runners stranded.
The Braves extended their lead in the top of the eighth inning through Drake Baldwin, who hit his 10th homer of the year to make the score 5-0.
The Dodgers managed to put themselves on the board, though, with Muncy hitting a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth to give the Dodgers an outside chance of winning the game. Atlanta quickly added onto their score, though, as Braves first baseman Matt Olson hit a homer of his own to make the score 6-2.
Wrobleski faced three more batters, getting the first two out before plunking Mike Yastrzemski and ultimately making way for Wyatt Mills, who the Dodgers called up before the game. Yastrzemski ultimately came around to score on Mills’ watch, making the score 7-2.
LA went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to close the game.
The Dodgers will remain at home for their next series and head straight into action on Monday, looking to take down a San Francisco Giants team which has struggled to find its feet this season. The first game of the series comes Monday at 7:10 p.m. PT, when Roki Sasaki will take the mound for LA.
What does LA have to change to get going on offense?
