While the Boston Red Sox’ pitching is doing amazing, their offense is abysmal. They need that big bat that eluded them in the offseason, someone to help jumpstart their cold offense.
It was reported that Boston’s front office has started spitballing trades for this season, so nothing is truly off the table. With that in mind, getting a bat like San Diego Padres All-Star Fernando Tatis Jr., whose name has been floated as a potential, albeit unrealistic, trade target.

The Sox would definitely have to give up some top prospects for Tatis, but that still may be unreasonable, at least for San Diego. But, if they were to throw in Jarren Duran, who the Padres have coveted in the past, it might be worth a look.
Yes, Duran is in the middle of a massive slump, but Tatis isn’t doing much better. He’s only hitting .238/.311/.281/.593 with five doubles, a triple, 15 RBI and 10 stolen bases. Still better than Duran, though.
On top of the potential assets flip, San Diego might be looking to get rid of his massive contract, as they still are trying to trim payroll. The Friars are currently around $37 million over where they want to be. Losing Tatis’ contract would take a massive chunk out of that deficit.

Even though Tatis’ small sample size at Boston looks undesirable, looking at his overall hitting is much better. Tatis has slashed .274/.352/.500/.852 with 152 in his seven year career so far, where one season he sat out due to injury and suspension.
He’s a pull hitter, as his spray chart shows he hits a majority of his dingers over left field for his career. With Fenway Park’s Green Monster making its left field small, he would take advantage of it for bombs and doubles.

Tatis really would be perfect in Boston. His swing is perfect for Fenway, and he’s a great defender at multiple positions. Take over left field? He’s a two-time Platinum Glove outfielder, so he definitely could.
He’s also a former shortstop, so taking over from Trevor Story would be a no-brainer as well. It would make Story an expensive bench bat, but he’s been one of the worst batters in all of baseball.
If the Sox are still hanging in there, even by a thread at the trade deadline, getting Tatis should be a priority.
