There will be no surprise reunion between the Cleveland Browns and TE David Njoku, not that anyone expected one. Njoku said goodbye to the Cleveland fans before the start of NFL free agency, after a unique bond with the city during his nine seasons with the Browns.
With the NFL draft in the rearview, Njoku was one of the biggest names left on the free agent market. Early in the offseason, “The Chief” visited with the Baltimore Ravens but left without a contract. Early in May, the Los Angeles Chargers brought the former first-round pick out for a visit, and early Monday morning, a deal was reported for up to $8 million for one season:
In nine years since being drafted late in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft, Njoku caught 588 passes for 4,062 yards and 34 touchdowns. Injuries and poor quarterback play kept the former Miami (FL) star from reaching the upper echelon of tight ends, with just one Pro Bowl appearance on his resume.
Perhaps a new start, Justin Herbert throwing the ball, and OC Mike McDaniel calling plays will lead to a bounce-back year for The Chief.
If you had to guess Njoku’s stat line with the Chargers this year, how many games does he play, leading to how many catches, yards, and touchdowns?
