The Washington Commanders have been back at work for a few weeks, as they opened the offseason program last month. That was for the veterans. On Friday, the rookies will make their debut in the burgundy and gold, as the rookie minicamp gets underway.
That means Washington fans will get their first glimpse of linebacker Sonny Styles in a Commanders uniform. Styles, along with Washington’s other five draft picks, nine undrafted free agents and around 20 players in camp on a tryout basis.
Rookie minicamp is different than the mandatory minicamp, which will take place next month. No contact is allowed, so coaches will be limited in their evaluations. It’s more of an orientation than an actual practice.
While it’s difficult to learn anything from the rookie minicamp, there are players that fans want to see. Instead of a rookie minicamp preview, here are four players to watch this weekend.
LB Sonny Styles
This one is obvious. The No. 7 overall pick gets his first chance in front of the coaching staff to show he should not only be the Commanders’ replacement at Mike linebacker for Bobby Wagner, but that he should also wear the “green dot” as a rookie. Washington hasn’t exactly shut down any expectations for Styles, with head coach Dan Quinn not ruling out Styles wearing the green dot in 2026. The player wearing the green dot receives the play calls from the coordinator. Essentially, the green dot signifies you as a leader on that side of the ball. It’s a rare job for a rookie, but the Commanders believe Styles is up for the task.
On Thursday, it was revealed that Styles will wear No. 52 for the Commanders. Fans can’t wait to see Styles in uniform for the first time.
WR Antonio Williams
Williams, Washington’s second draft pick at No. 71 overall, could also have a significant role as a rookie. A multi-year starter at Clemson, Williams can play outside or in the slot, and has proven he can beat man coverage, something not all college receivers can do. New offensive coordinator David Blough will run an offense similar to what Ben Johnson runs in Chicago. When Johnson was in Detroit, while Blough was a backup quarterback, the Lions had wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. St. Brown developed into a superstar playing in the slot in Johnson’s offense. Blough could envision Williams in a similar role for the Commanders. That would mean a lot of targets.
Sure, there is no contact in the rookie minicamp, but it is an opportunity to see Williams run routes. He’s been lauded for his route running, and this weekend is a big opportunity for him to impress Washington’s coaches.
WR Chris Hilton Jr.
Washington signed nine undrafted rookies, with Hilton being the most notable. A former five-star recruit at LSU, Hilton battled numerous injuries in college, limiting his production. He played with Jayden Daniels for two years, so the Commanders clearly received a good evaluation on Hilton. During pre-draft preparation, Hilton played in multiple all-star games, including the Senior Bowl, and was impressive at the 2026 NFL combine. While it wasn’t enough to see Hilton be drafted, he was quickly signed as a priority free agent. Considering Washington’s questions at receiver, there is an opportunity for the talented Hilton to impress. That must begin this weekend.
K Drew Stevens
It’s not often that fans are excited about seeing a kicker during rookie minicamp. However, Drew Stevens is a four-time All-Big Ten kicker. He drilled a 58-yarder to win a game. He made 12 career field goals (12-19) from 50 yards or more. The Commanders have Jake Moody back in 2026, but he is only on a one-year deal. This will be a true competition, unless Stevens truly stumbles. Moody, a former third-round pick, struggled with the 49ers before he was released. Before landing with Washington, Moody had a brief stint with the Chicago Bears. After signing with the Commanders, he made 10 of 11 field goals, including a long of 56 yards.
Stevens will have more eyes on him than the typical undrafted kicker. He has a real chance to be Washington’s kicker with a strong summer.
