New York sports fans could be facing a significant scheduling conflict this summer between the Knicks and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The World Cup is set to kick off on June 11, with Mexico taking on South Africa in the tournament’s opening game at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Meanwhile, the Knicks are gearing up for the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, where they’ll take on the winner of the Cleveland Cavaliers-Detroit Pistons series.
Although both the World Cup and NBA Finals are roughly a month away, fans could be confronted with a tough reality if the Knicks advance to the championship series, as per The Mirror US.

As things stand, the 2026 NBA Finals are projected to run from June 3-19, with Games 5, 6, and 7 penciled in for June 13, 16, and 19, respectively. It should be noted, however, that the final three games are only played if required.
Should the Knicks reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999, New Yorkers could find themselves torn between competing events with the World Cup taking place on home soil. The first two games hosted at MetLife Stadium are slated for June 13 and 16, directly conflicting with potential NBA Finals Games 5 and 6.
On June 13, Brazil will face Morocco at 6 p.m. ET, and three days later, France will clash with Senegal at 3 p.m. ET. Should the Knicks advance to the NBA Finals, and the series reach a fifth and/or sixth game, one of those games would be hosted at Madison Square Garden.
The primary transportation hub for fans traveling to and from MetLife Stadium during the World Cup is Penn Station, situated beneath Madison Square Garden. NJ Transit officials have already confirmed that World Cup ticketholders will receive priority access, with soccer fans being the only passengers permitted to board trains in the four-hour window before each match.
For the three hours following each match, NJ Transit will exclusively ferry World Cup ticketholders back to Penn Station.

NJ Transit spokesperson John Chartier urged fans of both sports to monitor the situation closely for any developments, which has proven to be something of a puzzle. In a statement per Gothamist, Chartier said: “The summer of 2026 is an exciting time for our region, with many major events occurring. We are asking everyone to stay tuned as we will communicate more details as the NBA Finals schedule develops.”
How the situation will ultimately unfold for both Knicks supporters — who have long awaited the team’s return to the finals — and soccer fans who have made the trip to New York to cheer on their nations in the quadrennial tournament, remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani encouraged fans to take to the streets for a kick-about as part of a wider initiative to introduce children to the beautiful game.
“The World Cup is coming to New York City, and we want every kid in this city to experience the joy of the game,” he said. “Soccer Streets takes that energy directly into our neighborhoods – closing streets to cars, opening them to play and making sure this celebration isn’t reserved for people who can afford a ticket.
“Open Streets is one of the best tools we have to reclaim public space for the public and these activations are another step toward bringing the World Cup to our city’s young people.”
