The Ohio State Buckeyes put in a strong second round at the NCAA Women’s Golf Ann Arbor Regional, taking the outright lead heading into Wednesday’s third and final round.
Of course, the round was much better for the Buckeyes before the final two holes, when three of Ohio State’s golfers combined to go five over par; the team was +1 for the round as a whole before that.
If a +6 round as a team doesn’t sound amazing, it isn’t. But every single school went above par on Tuesday, and Northwestern–the Round 1 co-leader (with Ohio State)–went +7, giving Ohio State the outright lead. No. 2 overall seed USC went +2 on the day, moving into a tie for second with Northwestern, one shot behind the Buckeyes.
The top five teams will advance to next week’s tournament championship in Carslbad, California. The Buckeyes are currently 12 strokes clear of sixth-place UCF, so unless they play a disastrous third round Wednesday, expect them to advance to the final tournament. Last year, Ohio State finished 24th (out of 30 teams) in the championship.
It is shaping up to be a strong championship field, as in regionals around the country right now, UCF (No. 14) and UCLA (No. 15) are the only top 15 seeds to be out of position to advance.
