The Philadelphia Phillies have been lackluster, but have now found their stride. Creeping up the National League East standings, they now sit in a three-way tie with the Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals for the second-place spot.
All three teams trail the Atlanta Braves by 9 games.
One of their best players has really put on a stinker this season, and it is now being broadcast across Major League Baseball. Trea Turner, the former two-time batting champion, is having an off-year thus far.
With a .240 batting average, he has not been the consistent bat that the Phillies desperately need this season. The 33-year-old is still under contract through the 2033 season, but might be a trade target for some this season.
In Bob Nightingale’s piece on MLB executives’ thoughts on trade deadline targets names Turner is mentioned. If the Phillies want any hope of gaining ground on the Braves, a move for Turner might need to be made if he cannot get out of this slump.
Especially since just last season, Turner hit .304, which was the highest in the National League. This stark cooldown at the plate cannot be ignored for too much longer.
