They marched home to Mililani with the koa
Mililani’s triumphant run at the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships marked the first for the Trojans. After decades of standout baseball teams and players, well-coached and catapulted into the college ranks for more success on and off the diamond, breaking through is just bananas.
“We’ve always had good kids who work hard. This year’s group really believed in each other and played for each other. We don’t have the biggest, strongest, most talented guys, but we’re going to play together and for each other, and just respect the game,” longtime Mililani coach Mark Hirayama said. “We’re trying to build guys to go to the next level, but we want to prepare our guys for life after baseball. I appreciate all the support from Trojan Nation. We’ve always had great support from our parents”
In 1987, the Trojans reached the semifinal round. In 2013, Mililani lost to Mid-Pacific in the title game, 3-1. In ’14, again in the final, only to lose to Saint Louis, 10-0.
In ’15, the Trojans lost in the semifinals. In ’18, it was a 7-3 loss to Punahou in the state final on Maui. In ’23, a loss in the semifinals.
With 30 players on the roster this season, Hirayama and staff managed as well as ever. The Trojans (26-9) played 35 games, including 17 nonconference exhibitions. Even the OIA interdivisional games, which did not count in the standings, were put to good use. One way or another, the massive roster was utilized.
When it mattered most, Mililani was in annihilator mode, beating Moanalua (10-0, six innings), Kailua (10-0, five innings) and Pearl City (13-3, six innings) en route to the OIA championship.
At states, it was an 11-1 win over Kamehameha-Hawaii in nine innings. Then a 3-2 thriller over second-seeded Kamehameha in the semifinals. The 1-0 win over Pac-Five in the final was a battle of wills. Resilience yielded results. A mistake or two made the difference.
Title town Hawaii
One day before Mililani’s baseball squad won the state title, the Lady Trojans captured their third-consecutive crown at the DataHouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships across the road at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Pitcher Hinano Bautista led the way and was named Most Outstanding Player.
Bautista had one of the all-time individual efforts in state-tournament history. She hurled 19 innings in the pitcher’s circle, earning wins against Maryknoll, Kapaa and Moanalua. He struck out 12 and walked nine with an ERA of 3.32. At the plate, her self-described slump came to an end. She went 1-for-4 with one RBI in the state-tournament opener against Lahainaluna, then went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a triple and five RBIs against Maryknoll.
Bautista went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and three RBIs against Kapaa in the semifinal round. In the title game, she went 3-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and a walk.
