One of the Boston Red Sox‘s division competitors received rough injury news on Friday.
Baltimore Orioles infielder Jordan Westburg will undergo season-ending elbow surgery, per Andy Kostka of the Baltimore Banner. Westburg has spent the entire 2026 campaign on the injured list after suffering a partially torn UCL in his right elbow during spring training.
It’s another unfortunate injury setback for Westburg, who missed nearly two months with a hand injury after making the American League’s All-Star roster in 2024. He played just 85 games last season due to a hamstring strain and ankle sprain.
Westburg has shown promise when healthy, batting .264/.312/.456 in 260 career games. He demonstrated a power uptick with 17 home runs in limited time last season while playing solid defense at second and third base.
The 27-year-old’s absence has hurt an underperforming Orioles offense that ranks 20th with a .693 OPS. Gunnar Henderson is batting .197, and offseason signing Pete Alonso is slashing a modest .218/.310/.424.
Jackson Holliday has also yet to play for the Orioles this season after undergoing surgery on a fractured hamate bone in his right hand in February. That’s forced Baltimore to play the likes of Jeremiah Jackson, Weston Wilson, Blaze Alexander and Coby Mayo in the infield.
The Orioles are 1.5 games ahead of the Red Sox at 20-24. Boston will host Baltimore for a three-game series to start June.
