The injury bug has hit Texas A&M baseball hard over the last month, forcing constant lineup adjustments and heightened caution with the postseason looming. After already losing two pitchers earlier this year, the Aggies are now protecting one of their most important weekend arms.
On Wednesday, head coach Michael Earley confirmed that Saturday starter Aiden Sims will not be available this weekend, leaving only Ethan Darden locked in as the Thursday starter. The remaining two games are officially “TBD.” When asked for clarity, Earley kept it straightforward:
“He’s had some tightness, and he needs some rest. … We need to make sure he’s ready to go for the long haul.”
That answer reads exactly like a postseason‑minded decision. With a national top‑eight seed still within reach, the staff clearly believes that resting Sims now is more valuable than squeezing one more regular‑season start out of him. And they’re right.
History shows that roughly half of the top‑eight national seeds advance to the College World Series. If Texas A&M wants to be on the right side of that coin flip, keeping one of its best arms healthy is non‑negotiable. Sacrificing a late‑season start to ensure Sims is ready for the regional and super regional grind is the kind of long‑view decision that can define a postseason run.
