In the play-by-play from the Los Angeles Lakers‘ Game 4 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, it’s a simple entry: “LeBron James misses two point shot” with 20.3 seconds left on the clock.
But it could be way more significant than that. It could be the last shot LeBron James takes in his legendary NBA career.
There are a lot of retirement questions in the air surrounding James, some of which he addressed after the end of his season on Monday. While the uncertainty will likely last a while as we wait for him to figure out his future, we can look at this play and wonder.
It’s a play that ended up focused on James in the middle of a game in which the Lakers were down just one, so it wasn’t symbolic. It left him in isolation against his former Lakers teammate Alex Caruso, and the drive to the hoop bounced off the rim before Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was fouled.

Will James want to go out on a miss? We’ll see. It’s a long offseason ahead, but the retirement talk has fully begun.
