The New York Yankees ‘ decision to option Anthony Volpe to Triple-A, it definitely raised some questions about his future in the organization. Volpe has been one of the more polarizing players on the Yankees and, frankly, hasn’t deserved to be on the big league roster.
There’s a reason the Yankees made this decision, even if they didn’t do so in the past.
Interestingly enough, the Yankees brought him up, as Jose Caballero is dealing with a finger injury.
“José Caballero is dealing with a banged-up middle finger on his right hand. Hurt it sliding back to the base yesterday,” Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News posted on X. “He’s gotten treatment. Next step is an MRI. He doesn’t think it’s a fracture and didn’t seem too worried about a possible IL stint. #Yankees.”
If they kept him in Triple-A for another few weeks, the Yankees would’ve added another year to Volpe’s contract, as he wouldn’t hit free agency until 2029.
On the other side of that, what if the Yankees decide to call up George Lombard Jr. if Volpe struggles?
I highly doubt that’s the plan, given how young Lombard is and the fact that he just made his Triple-A debut, but it would be interesting to see this happen and would effectively end Volpe’s time in New York.
