Bollywood is currently in sequel mode, with several popular franchises gearing up for a comeback. Lately, a number of sequels to renowned films have been confirmed by makers and lead stars. While some are in the works, some have already begun filming. Here’s a look at these upcoming Bollywood sequels and their current status.
1. 3 Idiots 2
There was a lot of buzz around 3 Idiots’ sequel, with fans wondering whether the franchise will move forward. Aamir Khan finally put all speculations to rest as he confirmed the sequel, expressing that part 2 has the “same humor with an unusual story.” Presently, the story is still being written by director Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi.
As per reports, in a recent development, it is being speculated that Vicky Kaushal has been approached to play the 4th Idiot in the sequel. As per The Times of India, the Chhava star is keen to come on board. Reports further suggest that his character is said to be emotional, adding a sentimental narrative to the original trio’s dynamic. However, these are just speculations, and neither Vicky nor the makers has confirmed anything yet.

2. Tumbbad 2
Sohum Shah created a space for horror-folklore in Hindi cinema with his 2018 masterpiece Tumbbad. The film garnered a cult following, especially after its 2024 re-release, making it the second-highest-grossing re-release of an Indian film.
The sequel went on the floor this year and is already generating tremendous buzz. Tumbbad 2 will hit theaters on December 3, next year, as confirmed by the makers.

3. Drishyam 3
Part 3 of the popular Hindi mystery thriller franchise was announced by its lead star, Ajay Devgn, last year. Set for an October 2 release this year, the film has gone on floors. Earlier, it was speculated that the original cast of the film, including Dhurandhar-famed Akshaye Khanna, along with Tabu, Shriya Saran, Isha Dutta, and Mrunal Jadhav, would reprise their roles.
However, Akshaye Khanna will no longer be a part of the film’s third installment, as confirmed by producer Kumar Mangat. He put to rest rumors that Akshaye quit due to money issues. Kumar confirmed that this wasn’t the case, as the actor had been paid his signing amount. As per a latest development in February this year, Prakash Raj has joined the cast, and clarified that he isn’t replacing Akshaye Khanna, per India Today.

4. Welcome to the Jungle
Last year, Akshay Kumar gave his fans a Christmas treat by sharing a teaser for Welcome to the Jungle, the third installment in the Welcome franchise, and confirming the shoot wrap. Since then, there’s been curiosity about when the film will hit theaters, and the makers have confirmed June 26 as the official release date.
Meanwhile, developments are being reported from behind-the-scenes. According to a report by Mid-Day, the team will be flying to Dubai sometime this month to shoot for Suniel Shetty’s intro scene in the movie. Earlier, the team was supposed to fly out to Dubai in March to shoot for a song, but got deferred due to the ongoing US-Iran-UAE war.
Suniel’s intro scene will be shot over three days on one of the most expensive sets in the movie. The makers wish for the actor’s entry scene to be similar to that of the late Feroz Khan’s memorable introduction in Welcome (2007).
The report suggests that Welcome to the Jungle is nearing its finish line before its much-awaited release.

5. Golmaal 5
The fifth installment of the popular Golmaal franchise was announced by maker Rohit Shetty in March this year. Golmaal 5 is returning with its original cast, including Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Kemmu, Tusshar Kapoor, and Sharman Joshi. Bhooth Bangla star Akshay Kumar was also confirmed as part of the franchise.
The film has begun shooting, and a new video from Ajay shows the OG team enjoying their schedule in Ooty. No official release date has been confirmed by the team yet.
